The current population of Asia is 4,814,812,998 as of October 09, 2024, based on interpolation of the latest United Nations data. The population of Asia is projected at 4,806,898,007, or 4.81 billion, or 4,807 million, as of July 1, 2024. The total population in Asia is projected at 4,778,004,486, or 4.78 billion, or 4,778 million, for the year 2023. Asia will add 481 million more before reaching a peak in 2054, with 5.29 billion people.

Asia is the most populous continent by a massive margin, as it has a population of nearly 3.2x that of the second-most populous continent, Africa. Asia accounts for almost 59% of the world population. Its global share was maximum in 2001 (60.73%).

The Southern Asia region accounts for 43% of the Asian population as it hosts India, the most populous country in the world. Eastern Asia accounts for 34.5% as it hosts China, the second most populous country in the world. These two subregions together account for 77% of the continent's population. Southern Asia overtook Eastern Asia in 2002 to become the most populous subregion in the world. 14.5 percent of the Asian population lives in South-Eastern Asia, 6.44 percent in Western Asia, and 1.71 percent in Central Asia.

Asia has the 4th highest population growth rate of 0.60% for 2024, below Africa, Oceania, and North America. Central Asia is the fastest-growing subregion in Asia, followed by Western Asia. Eastern Asia has a negative growth rate and is the only sub-region projected to have a negative growth rate until the year 2050. At the end of the century, three subregions will have a declining population except Central Asia and Western Asia. The population growth reached a peak in 1963, with an annual growth rate of 2.75%.

With the addition of 28.81 million people in 2024, Asia is the 2nd highest contributor to the total world population increment, which is near the population of the 52nd-ranked Cameroon. The net increase in the population per year peaked in 1989, with almost 61.6 million.
