Bihar has the 14th largest economy among Indian states, as the GDP of the state in the year 2024-25 is estimated at ₹9.92 lakh crore. With 9.24% of the country's population, Bihar contributed 2.91% to the national GDP in 2023-24.
Bihar has a GDP (nominal) of around 117 billion US dollars in 2024. The economy of Bihar is equivalent to that of Uzbekistan, the 62nd largest economy in the world.
Bihar's real GSDP growth rate for 2024-25 was 8.64%, the 6th highest in India. During the period 2012-24, it has the average growth rate of 5.98%, the 15th highest in the country.
In 2024-25, Bihar’s per capita income was ₹69,321, almost one-third of the national average. In terms of NSDP per capita, Bihar is the poorest state. The NSDP per capita of Bihar is two-thirds that of the 2nd-lowest state, Uttar Pradesh. People in Bihar have an income that is just one-fifth of that of people in Tamil Nadu. The nominal GDP per capita of Bihar is estimated at 878 dollars in 2024; that is equivalent to that of Sierra Leone, the 171st richest economy in the world.
In 2024-25, the services (tertiary) sector contributed 54.07% of the state’s Gross State Value Added (GSVA), followed by the secondary sector (23.18%) and the primary sector (22.75%).
