As per the report of the Technical Group by the National Commission, the population of Madhya Pradesh is projected to be 88,985,000, or 88.99 million, or 8.90 crore, as of July 1, 2025. Madhya Pradesh is the fifth-most populous state in India. Madhya Pradesh’s population is projected to reach 9.81 crore in 2036.
The size of the population of Madhya Pradesh is equivalent to that of Türkiye, the 18th most populous country in the world. Only one country in South America, one in Europe, two in North America, and four in Africa have more people than Madhya Pradesh.
In 2025, the sex ratio of the total population in Madhya Pradesh will be 106.141 males per 100 females. There are 45,818,000, or 45.82 million, or 4.58 crore, males and 43,167,000, or 43.17 million, or 4.32 crore, females in Madhya Pradesh. Madhya Pradesh has 2,651,000, or 2.65 million, more males than females.
Madhya Pradesh accounts for 6.28 percent of the Indian population, the highest since 1901. The population growth rate in 2025 is projected at 1.17%, the 5th highest among states. Madhya Pradesh will add 1,031,000 more people in 2025, the 3rd highest among states.
According to the Census of India 2011, the population of the state of Madhya Pradesh was 7.26 crore, increasing from 6.03 crore in 2001. There were 37,612,306 males and 35,014,503 females, with a sex ratio of 107.419 males per 100 females. The percentage of decadal growth during 2001–2011 was 20.35%, 3.91% lower than the 1991–2001 period. The population of Madhya Pradesh increased by 12.28 million during the decade 2001–2011.
The population of Madhya Pradesh, which at the turn of the twentieth century was around 12.68 million, increased by approximately 7.02 times in 124 years to reach 88.99 million in 2025. In 1901, Madhya Pradesh was the 6th most populous state, but as of 2025, it has overtaken Tamil Nadu.
