As per the report of the Technical Group by the National Commission, the population of Odisha is projected to be 46,953,000, or 46.95 million, or 4.70 crore, as of July 1, 2025. Odisha is the 11th-most populous state in India. Odisha’s population is projected to reach 4.91 crore in 2036.
The size of the population of Odisha is equivalent to that of Iraq, the 34th most populous country in the world. Only two countries in South America and North America, six in Europe, and ten in Africa have more people than Odisha.
In 2025, the sex ratio of the total population in Odisha will be 101.058 males per 100 females. There are 23,600,000, or 23.60 million, or 2.36 crore, males and 23,353,000, or 23.235 million, or 2.32 crore, females in Odisha. Odisha has 247,000, or 247k, more males than females.
Odisha accounts for 3.31 percent of the Indian population, 1.20% less than the peak of 4.51% in 1911. The population growth rate in 2025 is projected at 0.62%, the 9th lowest among states. Odisha will add 290,000 more people in 2025.
According to the Census of India 2011, the population of the state of Odisha was 4.20 crore, increasing from 3.68 crore in 2001. The population of Odisha increased by 5.17 million during the decade 2001–2011.
The population of Odisha, which at the turn of the twentieth century was only around 10.3 million, increased by approximately 4.56 times in 124 years to reach 46.66 million in 2025. In 1901, Odisha was the 9th most populous state, but as of 2025, it has been surpassed by Rajasthan and Gujarat.
