According to the IMF World Economic Outlook (October 2025), France's nominal GDP in 2025 is projected to be around $3,362 billion, $202 billion more than the $3,160 billion in 2024. In 1988, France became the 4th national economy to enter the list of trillion-dollar economies.

France currently accounts for about 2.87 percent of the world's GDP, but its share of the global economy—after peaking at about 6.06 percent in 1980—has steadily declined, reaching an all-time low of 2.73 percent in 2022 as other large economies expanded more rapidly.

France is currently the seventh-largest economy in the world, trailing sixth-ranked the United Kingdom by approximately $597 billion while maintaining a lead of about $818 billion over eighth-ranked Italy. France held the position of the fourth-largest global economy between 1960 and 1996 and has consistently remained among the world’s top seven economies throughout the modern period. The GDP of France was overtaken by Japan (1966), China (2005), and India (2017), leaving France in the current 7th spot. Estimates by the World Bank are available since 1960, when the country's GDP was 62 billion USD.

The service sector accounts for approximately 70.91% of France’s total GDP, while industry contributes around 17.21%, and agriculture makes up only about 1.30%.

France is the third-largest economy in Europe in nominal terms, accounting for around 11.3 percent of Europe’s total nominal GDP.

Based on PPP, France's GDP in 2025 is forecast at 4,534 billion international dollars, the 9th highest in the world, and it has remained among the top ten all the time. France contributes 2.17% of the entire world's GDP (PPP). The gross domestic product (GDP) of France at purchasing power parity (PPP) is 1.35 times the GDP at nominal.

Within Europe, France ranks as the third-largest economy by GDP (PPP), behind Russia and Germany, and accounts for nearly 10.3 percent of Europe’s total GDP at PPP.
