According to the IMF World Economic Outlook (October 2025), Germany's nominal GDP in 2025 is projected to be around $5,014 billion, $328 billion more than the $4,686 billion in 2024. In 1986, Germany became the 3rd national economy to enter the list of trillion-dollar economies.

Germany currently accounts for about 4.28 percent of the world's GDP, but its share of the global economy—after peaking at about 8.71 percent in 1979—has steadily declined, reaching an all-time low of 4.11 percent in 2022 as other large economies expanded more rapidly.

Germany is currently the third-largest economy in the world, trailing second-ranked China by approximately $14.39 trillion while maintaining a lead of about $734 billion over fourth-ranked Japan. Germany held the position of the second-largest global economy for nine years between 1960 and 1971 and has consistently remained among the world’s top four economies throughout the modern period. The GDP of Germany was overtaken by China in 2007. Estimates by the World Bank are available since 1960, when the country's GDP was 84 billion USD.

The service sector accounts for approximately 64.05% of Germany’s total GDP, while industry contributes around 25.62%, and agriculture makes up only about 0.91%. Within Europe, Germany is the largest producer in both the services and industrial sectors and ranks fourth in agriculture.

Germany is the largest economy in Europe in nominal terms, accounting for around 16.9 percent of Europe’s total nominal GDP.

Based on PPP, Germany's GDP in 2025 is forecast at 6,154 billion international dollars, the 6th highest in the world, and it has remained among the top six all the time. Germany contributes 2.94% of the entire world's GDP (PPP). The gross domestic product (GDP) of Germany at purchasing power parity (PPP) is 1.23 times the GDP at nominal.

Within Europe, Germany ranks as the second-largest economy by GDP (PPP), behind Russia, and accounts for nearly 14.0 percent of Europe’s total GDP at PPP.
