According to the IMF World Economic Outlook (April 2026), India’s nominal GDP is projected to reach around $4,153 billion in 2026, an increase of $237 billion from $3,916 billion in 2025. In 2002, India’s nominal GDP stood at $515 billion, meaning it has increased by a massive $3.64 trillion over the past 24 years. In 2007, India became the 14th national economy to surpass the $1 trillion GDP mark and the fourth in Asia after Japan, China, and South Korea.

India currently accounts for about 3.29% of the world’s GDP. Its share of the global economy declined from 2.71% in 1960 to a low of 1.07% in 1993, before rising steadily to a peak of 3.37% in 2024.

India is currently the sixth-largest economy in the world, trailing fifth-ranked the United Kingdom by approximately $112 billion while maintaining a lead of about $557 billion over seventh-ranked France. India’s global ranking improved from 18th in 1991 to 5th in 2022, its highest position to date, before slipping to 6th in 2026. Since 1991, India has overtaken the GDP of 12 countries: Sweden (1992), Switzerland (1992), Australia (1998), the Netherlands (1999), Mexico (2007), South Korea (2008), Spain (2010), Canada (2013), Italy (2015), Brazil (2015), Russia (2015), and France (2019). World Bank GDP estimates for India are available from 1960, when the country’s nominal GDP stood at $37 billion.

India ranks as the third-largest economy in Asia by nominal GDP, behind China and Japan. It accounts for approximately 9.25% of Asia’s total nominal GDP.

Based on purchasing power parity (PPP), India’s economy is projected at Int. $18,902 billion in 2026, making it the third-largest in the world after China and the United States. India accounts for 8.49% of global GDP on a PPP basis. Since 1986, India has overtaken Mexico (1986), Brazil (1990), the United Kingdom (1990), France (1992), Italy (1992), Russia (1992), Germany (2003), and Japan (2009).

Within Asia, India ranks as the second-largest economy by GDP (PPP), behind China, and accounts for approximately 17.1% of Asia’s total GDP on a PPP basis. India’s GDP at PPP is 4.55 times its nominal GDP.

India’s real GDP, measured at constant 2022–23 prices, is estimated at ₹323.12 lakh crore in 2025–26, compared with the First Revised Estimate of ₹299.89 lakh crore in 2024–25, representing a growth of 7.7% in 2025–26.

India’s nominal GDP, measured at current prices, is estimated at ₹346.35 lakh crore in 2025–26, compared with the First Revised Estimate of ₹318.07 lakh crore in 2024–25, representing a growth of 8.9% in 2025–26.

At constant prices, India’s GVA (Gross Value Added), GNI (Gross National Income), and NNI (Net National Income) are estimated at ₹294.91 lakh crore, ₹318.66 lakh crore, and ₹274.87 lakh crore, respectively. At current prices, the corresponding figures are ₹314.87 lakh crore, ₹342.05 lakh crore, and ₹295.62 lakh crore, respectively.

Measured at constant 2011–12 prices, India’s GDP has expanded 37.83-fold since 1950–51 and 1.79-fold over the past decade.
