Comparing United States and China by Economy

The United States and China are the two largest national economies globally in both nominal and PPP terms. The United States ranks first by nominal GDP, while China has ranked first by PPP GDP since 2014, when it overtook the United States. As of 2026, the two countries together account for 42.15% of the world's GDP in nominal terms and 34.42% in PPP terms. The GDP of both countries is also substantially higher than that of the third-ranked economies—Japan in nominal terms and Japan in PPP terms. Therefore, the United States and China are the only two countries in contention for the top position.

As per IMF projections for 2026, the United States, with a GDP of $32,384 billion, leads China by $11,532 billion, or 1.55 times, on an exchange-rate basis. China's GDP is projected at $20,851 billion. On a purchasing power parity (PPP) basis, however, China leads the United States, with a GDP of Int. $44,295 billion, which is Int. $11,912 billion, or 1.37 times, that of the United States (Int. $32,384 billion).

According to World Bank estimates, China's GDP was approximately 11% of the United States' GDP in 1960. This ratio reached an all-time low of 5.6% in 1987 but has since risen substantially, reaching 64% in 2026.

Due to China's population being more than four times that of the United States, there is a substantial difference between the two countries in terms of per capita income. The per capita income of the United States is 6.35 times higher than that of China in nominal terms and 2.99 times higher on a PPP basis. The United States ranks eighth in the world by nominal GDP per capita, while China ranks 77th. On a PPP basis, the United States ranks 12th, compared with 78th for China.

China recorded its highest GDP growth rate of 19.30% in 1970 and its lowest of -27.27% in 1961. Between 1961 and 2024, China's GDP growth rate exceeded 10% in 22 years. The United States, meanwhile, recorded its highest growth rate of 7.24% in 1984 and its lowest of -2.58% in 2009. The US experienced negative GDP growth in seven years, compared with five years for China.
