In 2026, Australia is projected to have a slightly female-skewed sex ratio of 98.51 males per 100 females, meaning females outnumber males by a narrow margin. Based on its overall female-to-male ratio, Australia ranks 122nd among 237 countries and territories worldwide and 8th among 23 Oceanian entities. Its sex ratio is similar to those of DR Congo, Palestine, and Fiji.

Australia has 13,511,184 (13.51 million) males and 13,715,912 (13.72 million) females in 2026, resulting in a female surplus of approximately 205K people. Males account for 49.62% of the population, while females make up 50.38%. Australia has the largest female surplus in Oceania and the 54th largest worldwide.

In Australia, the male-to-female ratio increased from 101.57 males per 100 females in 1950 to a peak of 102.62 in 1956. Since then, the ratio has steadily declined, falling below parity in 1979, when females began to outnumber males. Australia's sex ratio is projected to remain below parity through 2100.

The sex ratio at birth in Australia is approximately 105.5 male births per 100 female births. Historically, the ratio has remained relatively stable, fluctuating within a range of 104.8 to 106.0 male births per 100 female births.

As of 2026, Australia has more males than females in age groups below 35 years. The 10–14 age group has the highest male-to-female ratio, at 105.72 males per 100 females. Among children under 15, the sex ratio stands at 105.56, while the working-age population (15–64) is also male-skewed, with 100.05 males per 100 females. However, the ratio declines sharply among those aged 65 and older, falling to 87.38 males for every 100 females. Among older adults, women substantially outnumber men, with females outnumbering males by about 2 to 1 in the 95–99 age group and by about 3 to 1 among centenarians.
