List of continents by GDP

Asia is the world's largest continental economy. With a nominal GDP of $44.90 trillion in 2026, Asia accounts for 35.56% of the world economy. In purchasing power parity (PPP) terms, its economy reaches Int. $110.45 trillion, representing nearly half of global GDP.

North America has the second-largest economy in nominal terms, while Europe ranks second in PPP terms. Together, Asia, North America, and Europe account for approximately 91.09% of global GDP at nominal prices and 88.48% at PPP.

South America ranks fourth in nominal GDP, whereas Africa holds the fourth position in PPP terms. Oceania remains the smallest continental economy in the world.

In 2026, Northern America, with an economy of $34.89 trillion, is the world's largest subregion by nominal GDP, followed by Eastern Asia at $28.67 trillion and Western Europe at $13.17 trillion. Together, these three subregions account for approximately 60.75% of the global economy.

Eastern Asia includes China and Japan, the second- and fourth-largest economies in the world, respectively, while Northern America includes the United States, the world's largest economy. In PPP terms, Eastern Asia overtakes Northern America to claim the top position, while Southern Asia ranks third.

Micronesia is the world's smallest economic subregion, followed by Polynesia, with both economies having a GDP of just over $1 billion.

As per the UN, Asia's share had increased from 14.14% in 1970 to 36.25% in 2023. The contribution of South America and Oceania has also increased in the global economy. Europe's share has declined from 44.52% in 1970 to 24.36% in 2023. Among subregions, Eastern Asia is the highest share gainer, from 9.07% in 1970 to 23.65% in 2023. Conversely, Eastern Europe lost the most: 20.66% in 1970 to 3.99% in 2023.
