As of July 1, 2026, Asia's population is projected to reach 4,863,327,397 (4.86 billion), up from 4,835,320,060 (4.84 billion) on July 1, 2025. The population is expected to surpass 5 billion by 2032 and continue growing by another 425 million before peaking at 5.29 billion in 2054.
Asia is the world's most populous continent, with a population nearly 3.09 times that of Africa, the second-most populous continent. Asia accounts for 58.59% of the world population. Its share of the global population peaked at 60.73% in 2001.
Southern Asia accounts for over 43% of Asia's population, driven by India, the world's most populous country. Eastern Asia contributes nearly 34%, with China, the world's second-most populous country. Together, these two subregions account for over 77% of the continent's population. Southern Asia overtook Eastern Asia in 2002 to become Asia's most populous subregion. The remaining population is distributed across Southeastern Asia (14.5%), Western Asia (6.6%), and Central Asia (1.75%).
Asia has the fourth-highest population growth rate among the continents in 2026, at 0.57%, behind Africa, Oceania, and North America. Its annual growth rate peaked at 2.75% in 1963. Central Asia, Western Asia, and Southern Asia are projected to grow by more than 1% in 2026, while Eastern Asia is projected to experience negative growth. Eastern Asia is also the only Asian subregion expected to have a negative growth rate through 2050. By the end of the century, three of Asia's five subregions are projected to experience population decline, while Central Asia and Western Asia are expected to continue growing.
With an estimated population increase of 27.98 million in 2026, Asia is the second-largest contributor to global population growth, behind Africa. Asia's annual population increase peaked in 1989, at approximately 61.6 million people. Asia's annual increase in 2026 is comparable to the population of Venezuela, ranked 54th globally.
