As of July 1, 2026, South America's population is projected to reach 440,484,432 (440 million), up from 438,105,374 (438 million) on July 1, 2025. South America's population is projected to increase by another 28 million, reaching a peak of 469 million in 2049. It ranks fifth among continents, behind Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America.

South America accounts for 5.31% of the world's population and approximately two-thirds of the population of Latin America and the Caribbean. Its population is 181 million lower than North America's, accounting for 41.49% of the total population of the Americas. South America's share of the global population peaked at 5.64% in 2001 and is projected to decline to 3.72% by the end of the century.

South America has the second-lowest population growth rate among the six continents in 2026, at 0.53%, ahead of only Europe and slightly below Asia (0.57%) and North America (0.62%). It had the highest population growth rate among the six continents during 1951–1962 and is projected to have the lowest from 2070 onward. South America's population growth rate peaked at 2.76% in 1959.

Since 1950, South America's population has increased by 292%, the second-highest growth among continents after Africa.

South America is projected to add 2.33 million people in 2026. Its annual population increase peaked in 1983, at nearly 5.58 million.
