As of October 26, 2026, Europe’s population is estimated at 743,141,093, based on linear interpolation between the most recent official reference dates in the United Nations population projections.
As of July 1, 2026, Europe's population is projected to reach 743,482,361 (743 million), down from 744,398,832 (744 million) on July 1, 2025. Europe is the only continent whose population has already peaked, reaching 749.2 million in 2020, and is projected to decline thereafter.
Europe is the world's third-most populous continent, behind Asia and Africa. It ranked second until 1994, when Africa overtook it, and is projected to be surpassed by North America in 2054. Europe accounts for nearly 9% of the world population, down from 22% in 1950. Its share is projected to decline further to 5.82% by 2100.
Eastern Europe is home to 38% of Europe's population, making it the continent's most populous subregion. Western Europe accounts for 26.8%, followed by Southern Europe at 20.22% and Northern Europe at 14.8%.
Europe's population growth rate is projected to be negative at −0.14% in 2026, considerably lower than South America's 0.53%, the second-lowest rate among continents. Europe has been the slowest-growing continent since 1950 and is projected to retain this position until 2069, when South America is expected to have the lowest growth rate. Europe's annual population growth peaked at 1.09% in 1957.
Northern and Western Europe are the only European subregions with positive population growth, while Southern and Eastern Europe are experiencing declines. By 2055, all four subregions are projected to have declining populations. Northern Europe's population is also projected to surpass Southern Europe's from 2072 onward.
Europe's population is projected to decline by approximately 1.06 million people in 2026. Northern Europe is expected to add 447,609 people and Western Europe 44,704, while Southern Europe is projected to lose 472,646 people and Eastern Europe approximately 1.08 million. Europe's annual net population increase peaked in 1958, at nearly 6.5 million people.
