Comparing India and Pakistan by Economy

As of 2026, with $4,153 billion, India's GDP is around 10.18 times higher than Pakistan's GDP of $408 billion. In PPP terms, the gap is 10.51 times. India is the sixth-largest economy in the world by nominal GDP and the third-largest by PPP GDP. Pakistan ranks 45th by nominal GDP and 26th by PPP GDP. India's economically largest state, Maharashtra, has a GDP of $536 billion, significantly higher than Pakistan's. Even the second-largest state economy, Tamil Nadu, at $369 billion, is close to Pakistan's GDP. The gap between the two countries was the lowest in 2000, when India's nominal GDP was 4.71 times that of Pakistan, and the highest in 1973, at 13.4 times.

Both countries together account for 10.73% of Asia's nominal GDP and 18.85% of its GDP at PPP.

Both countries have consistently competed closely in terms of GDP per capita. From 1960 to 2008, India had a higher GDP per capita than Pakistan in only 14 years, while Pakistan was ahead in 35 years. Pakistan's GDP per capita was 1.46 times that of India in 1970. The gap has favored India since 2009. In 2023, India's GDP per capita was 1.79 times higher than Pakistan's on an exchange-rate basis, the widest gap recorded up to that point. 2008 was the last year in which Pakistan had a higher GDP per capita than India. Both countries rank relatively low in the world GDP per capita ranking. India ranks 153rd by nominal GDP per capita and 127th by PPP, while Pakistan ranks 166th by nominal GDP per capita and 150th by PPP. Of India's 33 states and union territories, 31 states/UTs have a higher GDP per capita than Pakistan.

With a GDP growth rate of 7.62%, India is growing much faster economically than Pakistan, which recorded a growth rate of 3.09%. India's GDP growth rate was higher than Pakistan's from 2001 to 2019. India recorded its highest GDP growth rate of 9.69% in 2021 and its lowest of -5.78% in 2020. Pakistan reached an all-time high of 11.35% in 1970 and a record low of -1.27% in 2020. From 1961 to 2024, Pakistan's GDP grew by more than 10% in three years, while India never recorded growth above 10%. India's GDP growth rate was negative in five years, compared with two years for Pakistan.
